We felt super creative over the full moon weekend and wanted to try something a little different. We got together a few ingredients we consider superfoods and made these elderberry throat pastilles.
Elderberry use dates back to Ancient Egypt however, Hippocrates, described the plant as his “medicine chest” because of the wide array of health concerns it seemed to help solve. This natural remedy is obviously one of our favourites, and no wonder, as it is known as one of the top immune herbs available.
Gelatine is a great way to get those collagen building amino acids in. In terms of health benefits, hydrolysed collagen and gelatine offer similar benefits for gut support, beauty, joint and bone health. They have very similar amino acids profiles, protein content and nutritional benefits. Because it’s not been hydrolysed like collagen, it doesn’t dissolve in liquid, so it’s a super fun one to create delicious healthy recipes with and get all the benefits of its anti-inflammatory protein.
Thyme and Licorice are two herbs regularly used for their soothing, demulcent properties. Herbalists often recommend them to help with a tickly cough or sore throat. We love the flavour of our Thyme and Licorice extract (like a spicy caramel) and think the recipe works well without adding sweeteners, but if you have a sweet tooth….
Elderberry Throat Pastilles
Ingredients
180 ml Elderberry Juice
60ml Botanicals 4 Life Thyme & Licorice Extract
2 Tablespoons Honey (optional)
60ml Gelatine Powder
You will also need
Silicone Candy Moulds (They are usually sold with the droppers needed to fill them.)
Method:
Bring the juice, extract and honey to a light simmer in your saucepan.
Remove from the heat, and pour the gelatine in slowly, while whisking quickly.
Once fully blended, use a dropper to fill the shaped moulds with the liquid mixture.
Put the moulds into the refrigerator for about 30 minutes, or until firm.
Pop them out and enjoy!
Try resisting the urge to chew on them and suck each pastille slowly until it dissolves.
